1. Is it ethical to experiment with animals? why or why not?
It is absolutely NOT ethical to experiment with animals, when the purposes is pushing all limits of what an organism can handle. Animals are part of the enviroment we live in, and to experiment on them seems extremelly cruel and unjust. Just because we are the beings that impact the world the most, doesn't give us the right to take or manipulate another being's life. In fact, couple years ago, here in Shanghai, there was a college graduate who went to the Shanghai Zoo and poured acid on a Gorilla just to see its reaction, this sort of sick abuse has got to stop. As time goes on, hopefully this type of cruel experimenting (I think I should be putting quotation marks around that) will stop.
2. Can Psychology or Psychological research be dangerous?
Most definitely, humans (apparantly) only use 10% of their brains, and we have people like Einstein around who can out think almost all other people. Imagine if we dove deeper into the mind, we could come up with ideas and theories that could end the whole world. However, psychological research can also be used to help the human race, perhaps one day we can permanantly cure disorders like schitzofrenia or bipolar disorder instead of just treating them temporily. This could end suffering for lots of people, so psychology can be extremelly dangerous and extremelly helpful.

i agree, good points. the animals that are used for experiments experience great intense shock according to animal protection. The researchers cannot treat the animals like this just like you said. But, the researchers assured them that the intense shock was only at a minimum. Overall it seems that experimenting on animals for research is fine because 7% of psychology’s studies involved animals and 95% of it were just rats, mice, rabbits, and birds. Additionally, the researchers themselves now feel ethically obligated to enhance the well-being of captive animals and protect them from needless suffering.
The dangerous thing about psychology is that it could be used for the bad. People can use psychology to manipulate someone's brain and persuade him/her to do anything. But they could also use this skill to educate. Psychology is linked to our deepest desires within us like love, happiness and life therefore showing that psychology is dangerous. |
