Source of Article: NY Times Title: You, Your Friends, Your Friends of Friends Date: August 5th, 2007 (1) What new information did you learn? The new information that i learned from this was that not only are friends influential in smoking, or drink. They can also be influential in eating. Obesity spreads from friends to friends. If one person sees their friends eating more, they tend to do the same. Also, depression spreads from friend to friend (2) What is your opinion of the research processes? Is it ethical or exploitive? What are the weaknesses and biases to the research? I enjoyed reading this article because i feel it is partly true. The weakness is that this case was probably only tested on Americans. Maybe in different cultures the case might be different. That makes this article a bit bias. It could also just be for certain cities. Maybe instead of Ney York doing this project, maybe Kansas could do it and see if there is a difference. (3) What further research could be conducted in this area? The further reasearch i would conduct would be to test different countries and different cities in American and study the data to see the differences. Maybe in different countries it would be the complete opposite and if so why? (4) How does this information relate to you? |

(1) What new information did you learn? i found out that their are phycologists who are interested in the sports field. (2) What is your opinion of the research processes? Is it ethical or exploitive? What are the weaknesses and biases to the research? I belive that the research processes is quiet amazing. it is ethical. my weaknesses are learning about sports altho i dont play any. (3) What further research could be conducted in this area? this can be conducted on famous sports players or people who want to become famous sports stars. (4) How does this information relate to you? it doesnt really relate to me since im not a student athlete. |

Title: Human Toddlers Trump Apes on Social Skills Date: September 7th,2007 (1) What new information did you learn? I learn that an infant child has better social skills than apes. The article suggested that we used to believe that our intelligence skill is better than apes due to the size of human brain to be three times bigger. But now they changed the theory into where we are more intelligent than Ape in intelligence involving social skills. They then performed a few tests and the result is that an infant is in fact more intelligent than ape in adapting skills as well. (2) What is your opinion of the research processes? Is it ethical or exploitive? What are the weaknesses and biases to the research? I think it may be exploitive however I think it should be ethical enough. I think that these kinds of research will help a lot of studies in evolution of human. The weaknesses of this research should be because the size of the human brain is different from an ape; we should expect great results anyway. Also, the age of apes ranged too far to really see the difference between an infant with an ape. (3) What further research could be conducted in this area? We could research on how animals behave in a social contact situation. For example, an infant with its mother and an ape with its mother; We can then spot out the real difference between human infant and an ape in a family. Also we might test reactions of an outsider coming into their environment. This will also tell us the difference. (4) How does this information relate to you? This information relates to me simply because I am a human and I would certainly like to know the difference between our evolutionary ancestor and us. This will then help us how our mind works comparing to an ape’s mind. |

Researchers have discovered that perfect pitch may be genetic. Also evidence showed that as people get older they experience a shift in pitch-naming, several of the older of the older participants were consistently shifting to sharp in their categorizations. People who have perfect pitch essentially have ranges of acoustic frequencies in “bins” corresponding to different notes. (2) What is your opinion of the research processes? Is it ethical or exploitive? What are the weaknesses and biases to the research? I think it’s exploitive and the weakness of it was that perfect pitching might also caused by the outer environment, people could improve their pitching if they had learned music or worked hard on music theories. I think it might have just been that they same family both have interest or influences of music due to the other related family members. (3) What further research could be conducted in this area? I think they could focus on more of the genetic part of the experiment; they could test and find what or how genes actually cause the perfect pitching of people. (4) How does this information relate to you? I started to learn music when I was 6, and music stands as a great part of my life. When I was learning music theory, the hardest part for me was the pitching part, where u had to recognize the notes. When I read this article I felt that the experiment is really related to me and found it interesting that perfect pitch could be caused by genetics. |

I learned that there are actually psychologists involved in sports. (2) What is your opinion of the research processes? Is it ethical or exploitive? What are the weaknesses and biases to the research? I am extremely interested in this, helping people overcome their fears in sports seems to be very exciting, I don’t think the essay was biased (or perhaps I’m biased to say that). (3) What further research could be conducted in this area? I think instead of focusing on young athletes, that it is time to move into the professional leagues, such as the NBA or NFL. (4) How does this information relate to you? As a student athlete, I feel that it is beneficial to know all about the ways to help improve my level of play. |
