1) Is it ethical to experiment with animals? Why or Why not?
The animal protection movement protests the use of animals in psychological, biological, and medical research. But, the researchers remind them that the 30 billion animals that they use for research is only but a fraction of 1 percent of all the animals killed annually for food. It is unethical for researchers to use these animals for research because these animals lose the ability to scream out in pain because of shock. These animals are exploited because they aren’t of much importance. Researches have gone against this too explaining how the shock is not intense, but mild. Overall it seems that experimenting on animals for research is fine because 7% of psychology’s studies involved animals and 95% of it were just rats, mice, rabbits, and birds. Additionally, the researchers themselves now feel ethically obligated to enhance the well-being of captive animals and protect them from needless suffering.
(Respond to one other classmates post)- Different groups perceived the experiments on animals and possibly humans in different ways. It’s not ethical to experiment with the animals according to animal protection because of the intense shock that the animals experience. The researchers assure them that the intensity is at a minimum. Overall it does seem ethical because experimenting on animals for research is fine because 7% of psychology’s studies involved animals and 95% of it were just rats, mice, rabbits, and birds none of which are of much importance. The dangerous part is that psychology can be used for the good and the bad just like how nuclear power can be used to light up cities or demolish them. With psychology, you can either educate someone, or deceive them through the cure of talk. Psychology links to many of the problems that we have today.
2) Can Psychology or psychological research be dangerous?
Exploring our own inner universe of our mind seems dangerous and threatening. Psychology can be used to manipulate people. This psychological power can be used for good or bad just like nuclear power to light up a city or to destroy it completely. Trying to persuade someone through the power of psychology is to educate an individual or to deceive an individual. Psychology links to many of our world’s great problems-war, prejudice, overpopulation, crime-all of which involve attitudes and behaviors. Psychology also links to our deepest desires of love, happiness, and a great life. Therefore psychology can be dangerous from time to time.
